What is a medical transcriptionist?

An individual who converts voice-recorded reports that are dictated by physicians and/or other healthcare professionals into written format.

Duties:

• Transcribe patient information from the spoken word into easily understandable and readable text.
• Format the text based on the specific report type used by a doctor or group of physicians.
• Consult references for medical procedures and terminology.
• Edit the text to confirm correct spelling of all terminology and words, and the use of correct grammar and punctuation.
• Distribute transcribed reports and collect dictation tapes.
