What is a medical transcriptionist?

A medical language specialist who transcribes voice-recorded dictation by physicians and other health care providers in order to document patient care into written format.

Duties:

• Transcribe voice-recorded provider dictation into accurate and readable reports.
• Format the reports based on transcription guidelines and practices.
• Consult professional references for medical procedures and terminology.
• Edit the text to confirm correct spelling of all terminology and words, using correct English grammar, punctuation and style.
• Operate word processing equipment and dictation and transcription equipment.
• Redistribute reports according to established timelines.
